Candles and Canvas

Ready to silence your inner critic and play with color? Join us for Candles and Canvas on Wednesday, January 28 at 7pm! This beginner-friendly class led by Rochester artist William Rivera-Bloodworth invites you to explore abstract painting through a fun, structured process that takes the pressure off perfection.

We’ll start by getting the vibes right: You’ll mix your own handcrafted scent and pour your own candle to take home. (8oz glass tumbler included in ticket price.) While your candle dries and sets, you’ll learn what the “point” of abstract expression is and the fundamentals of color mixing.

Next, we’ll dive into an exciting creative cycle: intuitively layering paint or mixed media, stepping back to assess your composition, refining what works, and building it up again. We’ll use playful “cheat codes” like collage and prompts to get you started, and you’ll learn key principles like the rule of thirds, value, and how different media interact.

No experience needed—just bring your curiosity! You’ll work on canvas with acrylics and mixed media (all materials provided), and leave with a unique abstract painting. More importantly, you’ll gain a repeatable process for creating abstract art that balances spontaneity with intention.
